How Zone understands your brain.

Electroencephalography, in your ears

Your neurons communicate with small electrical pulses. EEG measures the rhythm of that activity. Zone places the sensors in the ear tips instead of on the scalp, close enough to read meaningful signal while staying invisible. The placement is not a gimmick: conformal in-ear bioelectronics have supported working brain-computer interfaces in peer-reviewed research.

From ear canal to focus state, step by step

Zone filters the raw EEG, separates it into the frequency bands tied to attention and rest, and models the result as your current focus state. That pipeline runs in five plain-language stages, and each stage can fail in its own way, so each one carries its own guardrail. The five states, from In Flow to Depleted, are the human-readable output at the end of it.

  • Sample. The earbuds read the faint electrical signal from inside each ear canal, many times a second. When a sensor loses contact, the signal for that stretch is flagged as unreliable rather than read as real brain activity.
  • Clean. Software removes artifacts such as blinks, jaw movement, and swallowing, which are large enough to drown out real brain activity. Stretches too noisy to recover are dropped instead of guessed at, so a bad few seconds does not become a false reading.
  • Band features. The cleaned signal is broken into frequency-band features, the rhythms that shift with attention and rest. When too little clean signal survives to compute a stable feature, Zone waits for more rather than reporting from a fragment.
  • Estimate the two signals. Those features feed the estimates of Brain Load, how hard your mind is working, and Brain Energy, how much capacity remains. The estimates are smoothed over a short window, so a single odd sample nudges the reading rather than swinging it.
  • Name the state. The balance between the two signals maps to one of the five focus states. When the balance sits on a boundary, Zone holds the current state rather than flickering between two, because a jittery label is worse than a slightly slow one.

Brain Load and Brain Energy

Two measures sit underneath every state. Brain Load reflects how hard your mind is working. Brain Energy reflects how much capacity remains. Tracking both over time shows when to push and when to recover. Zone is in limited beta; you can reserve early access.

What we can't see

Being clear about the limits is part of the instrument. Three of them matter most. First, movement: chewing, walking, and talking add electrical noise that in-ear sensors have to work around, so heavy motion lowers signal quality and Zone leans on trends rather than any single reading during it. Second, coverage: an in-ear EEG array sits close to the brain but reads less signal than a clinical scalp cap, so Zone reports clear trends in your focus over time, not precise clinical values. Third, and plainly: Zone is a wellness and performance tool, not a medical device. It does not diagnose, treat, or manage any medical condition, and it cannot read your thoughts, only the rhythms of your attention.

How we validate against ourselves

Zone does not hold you to an absolute scale, because there is no single right number for a focus state that applies to everyone. Instead it learns your baseline over time and reads changes against it, so Running Hot means high for you today, not high on some universal chart. That personalization is what makes the states useful, and it is also why we hedge: the states are estimates of a balance measured against your own recent pattern, not verdicts. When your reading drifts, the honest question is whether your day drifted, and comparing you to yesterday-you answers it better than comparing you to a stranger.
